How To Get Rid Of Termites On Your Own

It’s so annoying to have unwanted guests; especially when they are in the form of termites. Termites are dangerous insects as they eat their way into all the wooden furniture at home. The minute you spot them at home, the next thing on your agenda should be to quickly get rid of them. There are several pest control companies that specialize in eradicating termites from one’s house. However, these professionals come at steep prices and can leave your pockets empty at the end of the termite pursuit. To cut down on termite treatment cost, the most feasible thing would be to get rid of these buggers on your own. But, how to get rid of termites on your own? Let’s find out!

How to Get Rid of Termites on Your Own

There are no natural ways to get rid of termites or any home remedies to get rid of termites such as with ants, ladybugs, etc. However, with the use of liquid termiticides and termite baits, one can get rid of termites.

Liquid Termiticides
Liquid termiticides have been the traditional termite elimination approach. These liquid pesticides create chemical barriers around the house, in the soil around the house, as well as on wooden furniture, etc. Termicides such as Termidor provide immediate protection against termite infestations. Termites get eliminated or killed as soon as they ingest or come in contact with the termiticide in the soil or wood. There are two kinds of termiticides; one which repels the termites and prevents them from entering and the other is the non-repellent type that kills the termites as soon as they cross the chemical barrier. However, homes on slabs and with basements require drilling making professional help essential.

Termite Bait
This method of termite control is comparatively more neater and less intrusive. It differs from the liquid treatment in the manner that it works on destroying the termite colony itself. These termite baits comprise a plastic stake sticking into the ground at different areas in the house. These stakes contain wood (food source for termites) and lure termites to them. Once these termites attack the wood in the stake, the stakes are then filled with pesticides that kill the termites. It is better than the liquid pesticide treatment because it does not contaminate the environment or soil.

Boric Acid
A mixture of propylene glycol and boric acid is seen to prove effective against several kinds of termites. Propylene glycol helps the boric acid to seep into the inner layers of the wood and soon become part of the wood fiber, thereby killing the termites hidden deep in the wood.

Borate Treatment
This technique is considered to be an effective termite treatment: do it yourself measure. In this treatment measure, sodium borate is mixed with water and applied to all wooden surfaces. When the termites ingest the wood, they also ingest the sodium borate applied on the wood. This sodium borate enters the system of the termite and kills the protozoa living in the digestive tract of the termite. These protozoa are responsible for digestion of wood, thus, when they have been destroyed, the termites cannot digest the wood. The problem with this method is that one will have to coat all wooden surfaces with the solution.

Once you have finally managed to get rid of these termites, there are some measures that you can undertake to prevent further infestation. Simple things like cleaning the baseboards with orange based cleaners and previously infested areas, avoiding mulch use, etc. can help prevent further termite infestation.
